Should You Be Using a Cell Phone Tracker?

One of the many questions people have when they first start researching a cell phone tracker is: Is it really a good idea to spy on someone’s phone?

Most of us worry about getting caught, or making a situation worse, or even getting into legal trouble. It really does seem like it should be illegal to spy on a phone, doesn’t it?

But the thing about using cell phone tracking software is that it isn’t illegal if you’re putting it on a cell phone that you own. And most tracking software makes it really difficult to put it onto a phone that you don’t own, since you have to have access to the phone in order to install it.

Which begs the question: Why wouldn’t it be a good idea to use a cell phone tracker?

Well, one reason that it might not be a good idea to use a tracker is that you could get caught. Usually that’s not because of the software itself, however, it’s usually because you’ll slip and accidentally alert the person you’re spying on that, well, that you’re spying on them.

You might think that that’s impossible, that you wouldn’t alert the person you want to spy on that you’re spying on them. But often, this happens accidentally.

Let’s say that you’re watching someone’s whereabouts by using the GPS tracking abilities of the tracking software. You’re logging into the server to see where they are at any given time. You’re watching where they are throughout the day.

Then the person comes home and starts talking about their day. And they outright lie to you. Let’s say they tell you they stayed at work for lunch, but you know they were at the Hilton at noon. So it’s a lie.

Chances are good that you’ll have a REALLY difficult time NOT indicating that you know this is a lie. Your body language will change. Or your facial expression will change. If you’re like the majority, you’re not going to be as good at lying as you’ll hope you are. Think about the reasons why you thought your partner was lying to begin with: You know there was something “off” about what was going on. You might not have been able to put your finger on it, but it was THERE, nevertheless.

And that little “off” nuance that you were picking up on could very well be the same thing that the other person starts to think is “off” about YOUR interaction with them, which will end up alerting them that you know something is going on.

Now will they know that you’re using a tracker to spy on them? Maybe not. But they’ll know that something is happening, which could make them change their habits.

But let’s say that you are perfectly good at lying and not showing that you know they’re the one who’s lying. Is there any other reason why using a tracker could be a bad idea?

One of the biggest risks of using a cell phone tracker is that you’re going to find out information that you really weren’t prepared to know. It’s kind of like reading someone’s diary — if you’re going to do it, then you really must prepare yourself to know someone’s deep, dark secrets — no matter what they are.

Spying on someone’s phone is even worse than a diary in some cases, because most people don’t know that you actually can spy on their phone. So if they’re taking pictures of things you don’t want to see, or visiting websites that they think you’ll never know about — let’s just say that they’re going to feel even safer to do those things, whereas they might not feel that way about writing something in a diary.

If you really don’t want to know what your employee is doing on company time, or what your child is taking pictures of, or where your husband is going at lunch? Then don’t install a tracker. Because sometimes it’s way better to just keep your head in the sand and wait until they hang themselves, than it is to know the real, dirty details of what you were suspecting but not really ready to find out.

If you do want to know the full truth and won’t be able to sleep at night until you do? Then that’s the time you install a tracker. But don’t do it until then, because it really might change how you see that person forever.
